Beef or chicken, tell me what you want ?

A Bathing Ape world domination plans continue this week with the release of
Teriyaki Boyz
(what's that name btw?) debut album, Beef or chicken. Why should you care ? Well, first the Boyz are among the new artists signed on the Jay Z is the boss Def Jam label. And now Jay is wearing Bape everywhere he goes, good for the street cred of Bape in the States. Nigo, Jay and co managed to get an impressive list of producers for the project, resulting in an all the money can buy type of album: Daft Punk ? check. The Neptunes ? sure. DJ Shadow? yep. And Just Blaze, Cornelius, Cut Chemist Ad Rock etc I mean who's missing ? Lil Jon ? might have been skiing somewhere. Kanye ? his Sidekick ran out of batteries. You get the idea.
And the result ? a clever marketing move for Bape, some good tracks (Cornelius, Blaze, Daft Punk, a chopped and screwed mix - I told you, all the elements for an hip hop success in 2005 are here), and an album that still sounds closer to J pop than to hip hop. Those guys are too clean, too nice, too quiet to impress anyone, even with the best producers behind them. Sorry, but this is no ghetto shit, despite Nigo's gold chains and camo Royce. But maybe they are all missing the point: why try to sound ghetto in Japan ? why not laugh at the silliness of it all ? Isn't wearing a Bape uniform ridiculous in Japan in 2005 ? why don't they make fun of it ? where's the fun ? where's Japan's TTC ? give us something fun, not 100% pop, not 100% street cred hip hop shit, give us something unique. And we can discuss the question of wearing purple camo hoodies later.
Chimidoro rockin' the house

At the exact opposite of the hip hop spectrum are
Chimidoro
. I went to their live tonight in Kichijioji and once again they rocked the place with a clever (and unique) mix of rap, electro beats and jokes. Fun, fun, fun. It's not perfect yet, I feel they are still thinking about what to do with the project, but they have potential, they can represent a much needed fresh air on the boring japanese hip hop scene. I don't know what they will do next, but this is a band I would love to produce tracks for. After their performance my head was full of ideas for strange, broken, fun beats to work on. Chimidoro we love you.
45 days

...and I'm late for my 45 days later post ! Sorry about that.
45 days ago (in fact, 50 days ago now) I wrote here that I was setting myself a deadline for finding a job and recording an album in Tokyo. 45 days, a job and a new album or I'm out of here. Well, 45 days have passed, and I am happy to write today that I'm staying in Tokyo.
So, what happened ?

First I got a job. Yeah, a job, like some kind of activity where you get money, right ? I am teaching english in a big teaching school here in Tokyo (no, it's not Nova). Not the biggest pay in town, but very flexible. And yes, I still have that terrible french accent :)
But wait there's more. I'll also start teaching french very soon. I also have private students (well, one for the moment). That's all for the teaching side of the business, but there might be more, involving consulting and business strategy for some big japanese corporations. I'm not going to discuss that now, but we'll see what happen. So, in one word: BUSY. Very busy time ahead.

In 45 days, I also managed to record a new album. Yeah, a new album, 10 tracks, all new Digiki material. And it's very, very exciting to have something new. But there's a catch: in 45 days, I recorded 90% of the album ! I missed my goal :) So for the moment the album is not yet completed, but trust me it's almost done. If you were at the Camouflage party last weekend (thanks DELA!) I played many tracks from the new album. Now I got a few things to do, then some mixing and it will be ready, some time in december. It's very exciting. The artwork is beautiful. The theme and sounds are very unique, personal, and (apparently) VERY Digiki. I can't wait to tell you more about it :)

In December I'll be playing in Osaka at club Saomai on Friday December 2nd. More info soon, but save the date !

And guess what ? there's more coming. A lot more. Some tracks. Some Polypunk. Some other stuff. Check back here soon !

Damn you Noos !
If you are new to this blog, let me sum up things (it's some kind of 'previously on Digiki' post):
I am 25, I'm living in Tokyo (Paris before), I've been online since 1995, doing a blog since 2001 but mysteriously my internet provider crashed one of his server and everything (this blog, files, web) went wrong last week. Instead of republishing everything, I think it's better to move ahead and look toward the future. So here we are now, +digi nikki+ in Tokyo, part two. You can bookmark the new, always-on (hopefully) address (http://www.hellodigiki.com), subscribe to the RSS feed here and comment on every (new) entry. Looking forward to hearing from you !

I got literally TONS of things to post here in the coming days and weeks, about cats, jobs, Tokyo life, my new album, some new amazing things I've heard (Darsh x Chimidoro anyone ?) and a lot more. Stay tuned.

If you are in Tokyo, you might want to check the CAMOUFLAGE party next saturday (11/5) where I'll be playing LIVE and DJing (LIVE too !). See my previous post for more details.
If you are anywhere near a MP3 player you might want to check my latest podcast/radio show Polypunk. here.
