The Draped Tower

International Architecture Competition in Greece / july 2010 /

program : Facade renovation

organised by the Greek Architects foundation

- purpose : Create a new facade for an existing building situated in the Port of Pireaus-Athens / Greece

- scenario :

The project seeks to define a facade thinking in terms of general envelope identity. The project has been defined across the skyline of Piraeus as we could see it from a boat or from the city.
This is a project issue from an ananlyze of the existing urban context : The new envelope is opposed to a voluntary architecture of globalization. The project dares a new vision and presents an ironic vision : The shape of the project references to the modern urban sprawl around the ancient heritage of the city of Athens.
The project entitled The draped Tower voluntarily assumes and plays the contrast between ancient and modern heritage. The form of the new project doesn’t refer to any architectural style, but attempts by his presence to show an existing situation, characteristic of the city of Athens. This project is builds by a radical surrealist vision.
The Draped Tower created an ambiguous situation: Effectively, its presence doesn’t have an architectural scale which makes its symbolic force. Its new presence describe a timeless appearance. It's also a kind of tribute to"I am a monument " of R.Venturi.
