- Word for volunteering : dobrovolchestvoto
- Words for volunteer associations: dobrovolno sdruzhenie

Traditionally, in Bulgaria the term volunteering refers to any provision of work and services without concern for financial gain. Accordingly, a volunteer is any person who provides such free and gratuitous labour. Despite the increase of political awareness about the importance of volunteering and the necessity to set up a legal framework, there is still a serious lack of legal provisions as volunteering is only partially recognized in some particular laws. the status of volunteers, as well as their rights and duties, is not set in law or formally recognised.

For further information, see the report of the European Commission about volunteering in Bulgaria.
