There is no generally recognised, and officially established, national definition of volunteering. The National Agency for Volunteering implies a definition of volunteering when it says that “Every volunteering action serves aims of common good, is conscious and without self-interest.

The Hellenic Federation of Voluntary Non-Governmental Organisations

 

The Hellenic Federation of Voluntary Non-Governmental Organizations was founded in 1996, responding to the need for coordinated action of Non-Governmental Organizations.

There are tens of institutions, members of the Federation, which take actions in various fields, as: human rights, civil protection, growth, humanitarian help in abroad, social solidarity (refugees, migrants, and poor people), environment, culture, young people and children, health and welfare, individuals with special needs.

The active members of the Organizations of the Hellenic Federation of Voluntary Non-Governmental Organizations are estimated to 12.000, even though there is a great number of volunteers friends supporting its work. Its aims and goals are the following :

- the protection of human life and dignity ;

- the promotion of the ideal of Volunteerism in Greece and abroad ;

- the moral and material support of disadvantaged people and social groups to be integrated into society ;

- the promotion of Scientific Research on Volunteerism by gathering relevant bibliography, educational programs etc. ;

- the proposition to its members of ways to improve their capabilities while acting ;

- the claim for its members' demands.
