- Word for volunteering : Vrijwilligerswerk.

 

There are different expressions used to describe volunteering in Dutch: the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport uses the term “voluntary work, or “voluntary action”.

Organisations promoting volunteering however, prefer to use the term “vrijwillige inzet” which translates into English as volunteering contribution /input, or just volunteering.

Vereniging Nederlandse Organisaties Vrijwilligerswerk, NOV

 

NOV aims at advising and having a positive effect on voluntary work. A total of 325 volunteer organisations come under the umbrella of the National Volunteer Centre (NOV), which supports its members by developing activities and products in the field of network building, policy and general and technical support services. NOV has a range of programmes, among them the development of associations and co-operative ventures, infrastructure and 'Finding & Binding', i.e. recruiting and keeping hold of - young - newcomers. Core tasks are communication and support, developing and influencing policies, creating networks and lending support. The department Society in Commitment is engaged in cultivating enduring partnerships between trade and industry and the volunteer sector. The insurance department of NOV is also developing insurance policies specifically styled for voluntary work.
