-
- - Word for volunteering :
Volontär/Volontärarbete.
- - Words for associations: Frivilligorganisation (non
profit organisations).
-
- There is no official definition for volunteering in
Sweden. However, across the literature the generally accepted
definition seems to be: ‘Time and effort that is freely given;
unforced
- and unremunerated, by individuals to voluntary and public
organisations’. A clear distinction is made between ‘informal’
work which is said to be unorganised and ‘voluntary’ work, which
is carried out under the aegis of an organisation. The voluntary
sector is also sometimes called the ideell sector.
Ideell is hard to translate into English but refers to the
concept of the public good.

- For further information, see the report of the of the European
Commission about volunteering in Sweden.

Volontärbyrån
-
- Volontärbyrån
was created in 2002. It is a
non-profit organisation funded by both governmental money and
through partnerships with for profit companies. Volontärbyrån is the only volunteer bureau in Sweden; its aim
is to help people find suitable volunteer opportunities. It
doesn't organize any voluntary activity, but helps people that
would like to volunteer to get in contact with organisations that
organize voluntary activities by letting the organisations post
volunteer opportunities on its website. About 270 organisations
search volunteers through its website.
