Support for volunteering - 14 August 2001
Report of the Secretary-General (A/56/288) The United Nations General Assembly has decided that two plenary meetings of its 56th session should be devoted to the subject of ways in which governments and the United Nations system can promote volunteering and that these meetings should coincide with the close of the International Year of Volunteers on 5 December 2001. (A/RES/55/57) The UN Secretary General was requested by the General Assembly to prepare a report on the subject for discussion on 5 December.

The report acknowledges, values and supports volunteer work and its important contribution to the development of human settlements.

Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries Third UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries Adopted by all UN member states. May 2001
LDC are encouraged to build on traditions of voluntary mutual aid and self-help forms of social capital to enhance effective social sector investment. Development partners are encouraged to include voluntary action in policies and measures to strengthen support in LDCs.

Volunteering and Social Development Resolution Adopted by ECOSOC’s Commission for Social Development: E/CN.5/2001/L.4 -2001
This UN ECOSOC resolution was endorsed/co-sponsored by 50 countries.

International Year of Volunteers Resolution Adopted by the General Assembly: A/RES/55/57 - 4 December 2000
This UN General Assembly resolution was endorsed/co-sponsored by 60 countries.

Further Initiatives for Social Development Resolution Adopted at the 24th special special General Assembly session entitled "World Summitt for Social Development and Beyond: Achieving Social Development for all in a Globalizing World" (Social Summit +5): June 2000
Adopted by all UN member states represented at the session. Encourages governments to promote the involvement of volunteers in social development.

International Year of Volunteers, 2001 - 20 November 1997
Resolution Adopted by the General Assembly: A/RES/52/17 This UN General Assembly resolution declared the "International Year of Volunteers, 2001."
