Theory, Culture, Society
vol. 23 (6), November 2006

This number of the journal is entirely dedicated to Bourdieu and represents an attempt to develop a sociological understanding, as well as a creative critique of his work on modern socio-cultural phenomena.

The contributions collected concern the main themes tackled by the French sociologist, focusing on his commitment to the creation of a community of intellectuals/researchers: his theory of "habitus"; a threefold reflexive ethno-sociological study of Bourdieu's background; a study of Foucault's work and intellectual environment in context to Bourdieu; his idea of gender as a relation of masculine domination; a theoretical framework for literature as a model applying to any kind of cultural products.

Of special interest is the article by Fowler examining the process of cultural production and reception, as well as the conditions of access in the modern society, and identifying in the artistic and the scientific fields two crucial cultural sources of autonomous and critical thoughts.
