Theory, Culture, Society
vol. 23 (7-8), December 2006

This double number is an annual review, intended to round up the year by combining a mixture of current debates from across the social and cultural sciences, systematic overview of new topics, profiles of key thinkers, and commentaries on global developments and events. This first annual review is dedicated to Friedrich Kittler, a contemporary German theorist in the field of media, technology and culture; and to Donna Haraway, author of the Cyborg Manifesto, whose pioneer ideas of biotechnology published twenty-one years ago are relevant even today.

The articles in the Global Public Life section review recent political, artistic or cultural events; in this issue they include a photo essay on street life in Calcutta, and present the Big Bang exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou. The Global Cultural Studies section addresses cultural studies in other national setting, elaborating here on issues of South Africa, India and Japan.
