Tell us about the new single dead star, was it inspired by space?
No, yes, kind of. Let me think, I sort of got into that kind of thing, looking into space and all that - bit embarrassing, really. I'm a bit of a Star Trek fan in secret, but don't tell anyone (laughs). The song is about, let me think, it kind of how everyone reacted to the 11 september thing. We were in Boston at the time, we got stuck there, and that's when we recorded those songs. So, in some ways, the lyrics are a little bit about the hysteria around that time and how people were really quick to point fingers at everyone else when they should have pointed fingers at themselves.

Muse videos are generally pretty impressive affairs. What about the fabulous visual treats do you have in store for us now?
Oh, these ones are really cheap. I just thought: "fuck it", I can't be arsed . We also wanted to see if we could do it to ourselves, and we did. They cost about 50$, and all of that went on beer (laughs). These singles aren't the album tracks, or anything, we just wrote them when we were on tour last October. On that tour we made the dvd, and some songs were written for that. I don't think they'll all be on a future album. So the videos are only live preformences really, apart from the videos of Dead Star, which we did in Winston, Churchill's house in Brighton.

What were you doing up there?
Writing, recording, drinking beer, we hired it out for 6 months. It was great though, because that's where he kept all his dogs. When Churchill wasn't leading the country in to that ware, he was racing his dogs in Brighton. We went into that cellar and found all these old prizes and certificates he has won for various dog competitions.

Counting Crows has said they are fans of Muse . How do you cope with praise from big bands?
It's always surprising when people get in to your band, especially when they are older than you. There's a band in America who really loves us called "System Of A Down" [nu metal band], and they are trying to get us on a big stadium tour of the USA. That's always a really nice surprise. When we first started out, Red Hot Chilli Peppers liked us, and we got to do a tour with them. It's always surprising when a band look up to you like you - it's sort of scary.

So, what's next for Muse?
We're making plans to maybe go to America - it depends if we can get on that tour. It also depends on if we can afford at the time, because we are quiet keen to do a third album at the end of this year. Let me think, I don't know anything could happen.

Third albums are notoriously difficult. Do you suffer from writer's block.
I always do for a period of time, but I'm not at the moment. No, at the moment I'm writing a lot of stuff. I think the best moment for writing is when you're away from the studio, away from the whole touring. Only when it's dawn on you how much you've changed. It's during those moments of realisation that I find writing songs the easiest.
