Learn how to knit

First snow of the year

Merry Christmas (i love you)

Common cold

Three generations

A house or maybe a boat

Almost a full moon

Watching the fires

Silent Night

Clairefontaine who are you
I like the paper you make
We were introduced by a lover of mine
And now she's gone and I still have you
Clairefontaine

Clairefontaine
You seem to bring the best out of me
And the things that I write to sing
Clairefontaine

Clairefontaine
Are you a lumberjack or something
Does your father own a forest of the nicest trees for chopping
Clairefontaine

Clairefontaine
Your sheets are very smooth
I like to rub my pen across them
Do you feel the way I do
Clairefontaine

Clairefontaine
You seem to bring the best out of me
And the things that I write to sing

Clairefontaine
If the newspapers used your paper for the news
Things may seem less terrifying just because of you
Clairefontaine

And were you in the garden
When they said the war had started
Did you think you'd write a letter
That would start 'my dear departed'
Clairefontaine

Clairefontaine
You seem to bring the best out of me
And the things that I write to sing
Clairefontaine x 4

Clairefontaine
I'm going home for Christmas
They may refuse me entry
Cause you're native to this country
Clairefontaine

But as a foreigner relinquish
A pad of paper so distinguished
I say never never never
I'll take this pad of mine to heaven
Clairefontaine

Maybe I will choose to write a fan letter or two
I might write one to andy warhol
And the other one for you
And you can rest assured in knowing
They'de be on your paper too
Clairefontaine who are you

Clairefontaine
You seem to bring the best out of me
And the things that I write to
Clairefontaine
You seem to bring the best out of me
And the things that I write to
Clairefontaine x 3

I don't have a cent this Christmas usual it seems

So I'm going to learn how to knit

I'll knit you a sweater

I'll knit you a scarf

I'll knit you a cigarette holder

I'll knit you an airplane to fly and meet me here

I'll knit you the nicest taxi cab to pick you up from the airport when you get in

I'll knit you some mittens

I'll knit you some socks

I'll knit you a cigarette holder

I'll knit you the perfect Christmas feast for us to share

I'll knit you a setting sun that seagulls fly behind on the water

I'll knit you a blanket

I'll knit you a shawl

I might not knit anything at all

If my clumsy hands don't learn to knit by Christmas day

Would you still invite me by to celebrate the day in the morning

If all I brought was a kiss

It's the first snow of the year

I guess it happens once a year

It's the first snow of the year

Oh glory

And dogs in the neighbourhood are going crazy

And even all the old ones that are usually lazy

It's the first snow of the year

I wonder will it stay for good

I wonder will it be here in the morning

When I wake up to meet the day

Will the fresh white snow still around me lay

It's the first snow of the year

And I know that by February

My thoughts on snow will be contrary

But this is now and then is then

It's the first snow of the year

So put the bicycles away

And clear the walkways with a borrowed shovel

And I heard this year is going to be trouble

If you thought last year was bad

This year's supposed to be double

But you can never tell

And it's probably just as well

Take the toboggan to the nearest valley

And night time comes just way too soon

And you drag the thing home under a half lit moon

It's the first snow of the year

And I know that by February

My thoughts on snow will be contrary

But this is now and then is then

It's the first snow of the year

So I think we should go to bed early

Light a candle where we lay

Stay as warm as we can stay

Fill my nose up with the smell

Of the first snow of the year

Before you know the things will be getting long but as

We hunker down a spell

And the fire's burning well

I like the way that we keep warm in the covers

On the first snow of the year

If god takes you

He leaves a huge footprint of love

And kindness behind that was where you once stood

I know you're afraid

To get on the plane after what happened that day

And selfishly I want you here in my way

But animals come

And animals go

Love is just a laundry line we hang on until

We're dried out by the sun

And when you think your turn is done

You end up getting dirty and it's all again begun

Now words I think are just

A noisy dirty wind

Makes the trouble we get in

So why do we speak

Now we made another war

That's what men are good for

Men with stupid insecurities

And not a lot more

And satisfied they tried

It's written about again

But who the hell reads history

Apparently not men

I guess nothing's guaranteed

Except the politics of need

Did the romans see the ship go down

Or were they asleep

And I shouldn't expect to live

And I shouldn't expect to die

But I wouldn't mind being beside

You dear on that laundry line to dry

And for my grandma and my brother

My father and my mother

And you my sweetest lover

To you all I will say

Merry Christmas I love you and god is above you

Merry Christmas I love you and god is above you

Merry Christmas I love you

Common cold

Common cold

Christmas time with the common cold

No I won't go back and I'm never getting over

This common cold

We're much the same

Heading home on the plane

Lying at the border to avoid paying claims

Cause our bags are full of presents

And it's Christmas all the same

We just got home off the plane

And I'm going to kiss you nice and deeply

Between your swollen glands

And cold is a nice excuse

When your friends call to talk to you

To say you can't go out

They say you're getting old

It's another thing I like about the common cold

Nearly OD'd on vitamin c

you're standing in a line up with a gift just for me

And you'll wrap it up in newsprint with a bow quite naturally

I won't even try to peak

And I'm going to kiss you nice and deeply

Between your swollen glands

And cold is a nice excuse

When your friends call to talk to you

To say you can't go out

They say you're getting old

It's another thing I like about the common cold

Common cold

Common cold

They've got a miracle cure or that's what you've been told

Well now let's not rush to remedy

Come get warm in bed with me

We'll try the heat

Cause I'm going to kiss you nice and deeply

Between your swollen glands

And cold is a nice excuse

When your friends call to talk to you

To say you can't go out

They say you're getting old

It's another thing I like about the common cold

Wash the dishes

Wash the dishes

The Christmas dinner dishes

Three generations in the kitchen all at once

And go and get a camera

Go and wake up grandpa

Three generations in the kitchen all at once

Play a Christmas album

The elvis Christmas album

Three generations sing blue Christmas all at once

And light another candle

Come sit near the piano

Three generations sing together all at once

Put away the turkey to make sandwiches tomorrow

And put away the bones to make the soup for the winter

But not the wish bone we'll just leave it on the counter

To let it dry out this week

In time to make a wish for new year's eve

Take turns with the washing

And take turns with the drying

Three generations in the kitchen all at once

Soak the tough ones till tomorrow

And save the suet for the winter sparrow

Three generations merry Christmas all at once

Put away the turkey to make sandwiches tomorrow

And put away the bones to make the soup for the winter

But not the wish bone we'll just leave it on the counter

To let it dry out this week

In time to make a wish for new year's eve

And put away the fancy dishes just to take them out next Christmas

Three generations are only together for so long

Telling stories of the good times, the bad times and the war times

Three generations are only together for so long

I think I will find some wood and build a house

Or maybe a boat

I don't know

Just a place to call my own so when you come by

To drink some wine

There'll be a roof outside

All night

But I have never been so good

With a hammer and nails

So patience baby

Christmas may be miles away

But that's the day

I should be done

So bring your kisses and a couple of clementines

To go with the wine

And we'll keep the rind

Cause the smell is just right at Christmas time

And then we'll join our voices there

Let nothing you dismay

Remember Christ the saviour was

Born on Christmas day

So come let's invite both our families

To sing while the piano accompanies

Tonight

Don't worry about the dishes

Come beside me dear

We'll kiss for the rest of the year

We'll flat some rind

I think I might find some wood and build a house

Or maybe a boat

I don't know

Together, together, together we'll flow

(Almost a full moon...)

Let's make some soup

Cause the weather is turning cold

Let's stir it together till we are both grey and old

Let's stir it together till it tells us stories of its own

Let's make some soup

Cause the weather is turning cold

Pumpkin and parsnip carrots and turkey bones

Bay leaf and pepper potato and garlic cloves

You stir a moment while I put more wood in the stove

Let's make some soup

Cause the weather is turning cold

The moon's almost full and the candles are burning low

It's almost midnight and you wouldn't even know

The light gets reflected on freshly fallen snow

Let's make some soup

Cause the weather is turning cold

We'll make enough to feed everyone we know

We'll make enough to feed everyone we don't

Nobody's different and everyone's alone

Let's make some soup

Cause the weather is turning cold

Let's make some soup

Because everyone feels the cold

Let's make some soup

Cause the weather is turning cold

Cold

(Almost a full moon...)

Running through the castle

The fires around you burn

I'm a ghost here

From somewhere

Watching the fires around you burn

Oh oh oh

Watching the fires around you burn

Oh oh oh

Watching the fires around you burn

There's a fireplace beside your be

There's a candle in the hall

There's a burning to be someone else

When the summer turns to fall

Oh oh oh

Watching the fires around you burn

Oh oh oh

Watching the fires around you burn

And the salamander colour (ouh, ouh)

Goes and washes through the water (ouh, ouh)

And the space beneath the picture (ouh, ouh)

And the comfort that it brought her (ouh, ouh)

And she lights herself a pipe (ouh, ouh)

And sings herself to sleep (ouh, ouh)

Singing

Watching the fires around you burn

Watching the fires around you burn

Watching the fires around you burn

Watching the fires around you burn

Watching the fires around you burn

Watching the fires around you burn

There's a burning to be someone else

When the summer turns to fall

Silent night, holy night

All is calm, all is bright

Round yon virgin mother and child

Holy infant so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace

Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night

Shepherds quake at the sight

Glories stream from heaven afar

Heav'nly host sing Allelluia

Christ the savior is born

Christ the savior is born

Silent night, holy night,

Son of God, love's pure light

Radiant beams from thy holy face,

With the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth
