Money!

The easiest and cheapest way to get cash in France is to use your ATM card. Any card that has a PLUS or CIRRUS symbol on the back of it will be recognized in Europe. You will get the best exchange rate because your bank is negociating one rate for all transactions on any given day. If you don't have an ATM card (and you know who you are) then stop living in the Dark Ages and GET ONE!

It's still possible to bring American Express or other traveller's checks. However, keep in mind that you will have to go to the AMEX office in Paris to cash them. This may not be convenient (or even possible on Sunday). Therefore if you arrive during the weekend, it's a good idea to have enough cash to last until Monday. Also, there are no AMEX offices in Landerneau or Brest.

You can, of course, always change dollars or traveller's checks at a bank or an exchange bureau. You will have to pay the associated fees and you will most likely NOT get a competitive exhange rate. Keep in mind that most banks in Brittany close for lunch and are not open on the weekends. They may also be closed Mondays.

It's not a bad idea to get some euros from your bank before you leave the US. Contact the foreign currency department of your bank for details.
