Pre-thinking

All the information about the setup and the rules of Adventure4 could be found there: http://realmsbeyond.net/civ/c4tourney/adv4.html. In short, we can’t learn the Alphabet during the game and have to launch.

This report is quite short, because (a) I didn’t take lots of notes and (b) the beginning was quite uneventful and when the excitements arrived, a few pictures (some lost BTW) and words would be able to describe the actions …

The opening

After sending the warrior on the southern hill (to check along the river if the coast was near) discovering the Ivory, Thebes is founded on the spot.

The research is set on Pottery for both granary and cottage, and a worker is immediately started with the aim of quite fast growth (but no farm on flood) and good commerce until maximum population (size2 in 3120BC, 3 in 2880BC, 4 in 2720BC, 5 in 2520BC to finally size 6 in 2200BC).

Therefore the worker gets the pig first and then cottages all the floodplains, stopping only for the ivory, mining the ‘bare’ hills, connecting copper and marble (as soon as techs are learned).

Thebes’s early productions were as follows: worker (3440BC), granary (2440BC), barracks (2160BC), archers (2080BC & 2000BC), worker (1800BC), archer (1520BC) and settler (1480BC).

The research was set in favours of workers and military techs, with the decision not to try to go for an early religion, until I decided to g for the Wonder techs.

Therefore the techs are researched in that order: Pottery (3640BC), Hunting (3440BC), Animal Husbandry (3080BC), Mining (2840BC), Archery (2640BC), Bronze W (2280BC), Mysticism (2120BC), Polytheism (1840BC), Masonry (1680BC) and Priesthood (1560BC).

The early religions were FIDAL quite very early with Buddhism in 3640BC and Hinduism in 3240BC with no chance ever to be for me, while Judaism was FIDAL a bit later in 1520BC but without me giving a try (because of how fast the first 2 went).

The warrior and the latter archers went on exploration trips, quickly meeting Capac’s troops in the south (2920BC), then Qin’s troops in the north (1720BC). All the early villages gave us (useless) maps until one gave 4 angry warriors (1600BC), the archer killed 2 but was not able to resist the 3rd one.

At this stage, the barbarians were quite everywhere, cutting the access to both directions with cities relatively well protected. They were not a big danger for Thebes, but sending the settler out was perilous.

In 1240BC, Thebes finishes the Oracle (getting Metal Casting) and Memphis was founded on the north-east, between Rice, Ivory and Sugar (2W of the injured warrior on the previous picture) with later access to Clam and Bananna.

Memphis starts on a forge, while Thebes quickly build another archer before its forge (1000BC) and then a second settler (875BC) to found Heliopolis (825BC), on the river bend to get Gold, Rice, Horse and lots of hills.

Thebes then completes the Parthenon (600BC) before going military (mixed of archers, axes, swords and chariots) and settlers mainly.

To finish the ‘early time’, after the free Metal Casting, the research was Iron Working (1040BC), Writing (825BC) and Fishing (700).

We meet Roosevelt in 525BC (galley coming from the north), up to now, none of our neighbours had any religion (the first 3 were on the other continent).

Confucianism is FIDAL in 625BC. And Pyramids go to China in 450BC.

Expending

Thebes building orders after that were a mixed of military, settlers and wonders (Parthenon).

The first GP, Moses is born in Thebes in 375BC, but wants to discover ultra cheap techs, I had to ‘clean’ all those, Meditation (300BC) and Monotheism (200BC) to be able to use him to get Theology (175BC) and found Christianity (in Memphis). The Church of Nativity will be built in 475AD with the next prophet and all the following ones (4 in all game) will be super priests in Memphis.

In 100BC, America has ALPHABET, but nothing interesting to offer. After Roosevelt ‘gently’ asks for and gets Polytheism in 50AD, we manage the first techs trade Metal Casting for Monarchy & Sailing.

Meet Khan in 350AD, he is a religion founder and has managed to convert America and China to Confucianism. I trade him Currency for Theology and he gets pleased (+4 for the trade).

More cities were built or captured from barbarians:

·         Elephantine in 250BC, in the SW to get the end of the river and some hills (Iron).

·         Bantu in 225BC captured.

·         Alexandria 125AD, nest to the clam almost facing the little island.

The picture shows that in my hurry to take Turian away from Khan’s troops, I forget to check the size and autoraze the city.

·         Pi-Ramesses (500AD) in the same place as Turian (previous pic), given enough time and full workshops, mines and watermills as well as 4 sugars plantations, this city will be the most productive of Egypt (Iron Works as well – see last picture).

·         Giza (620AD), east of Pi-Ramesses to claim the Stone and Iron before America lands there.

There are still (uncontested) rooms to expand, mainly filling space, but the taxes are now up to 50%, so it will wait until better time (an better technologies). The game now is to send missionary to every city on this continent.

Capac is converted in 920AD, Roosevelt in 1100AD, Qin probably even earlier (no memory of that). For a short time will also be abandoning his own religion.

The Wonders race is raging, as Thebes gets Hanging Gardens (900AD), Hagia Sophia (1160AD) and Angkor Wat (1250AD), Memphis gets Colossus (150AD), Forbidden Palace (1170AD) and Spiral Minaret (1300AD), while we lose or do not compete for Great Library (760AD) and Versailles (1410AD).

More cities are founded: Byblos (1020AD), El-Amarna (1110AD), Hieraconpolis (1310AD) and Abydos (1400AD) to more or less set the definitive borders.

In 1300AD, get contact with Frederick and Asoka who are not happy because of religion and trade with worst enemy. There are anyway quite backwards compared to our continent. Buying the American maps give us the circumnavigation bonus around the same time.

Cruising mode

Even if a crappy historian (whose name can’t be written) says that we are 6th in technology, we are the first to liberalism anyway (get Astronomy).

We are researching the bottom part of the tech tree (aiming for rail/factory) while trading the top.

Get (through trade) constitution in 1550AD, revolt to representation. Get the Statue of Liberty in Thebes in 1630AD (with help of a great Engineer saved).

Statue of Liberty + Mercantilism + Representation = 2 free ‘enhanced’ specialists in all cities.

The following years are uneventful.

How often do you have that (well except from LotR22 of course)? Well that is nice, but without the culture slider, it is a just manageable with representation and trading all possible luxuary.

What about that one.

I even managed to get America in it at some point to have an all Christian against the world. Also note that Khan is pleased while the other continent is not very happy.

I had about 10 troops on the borders and a minimum of 2 machine guns in all coastal cities, plus some Ironclad keeping the fishnets, so I did not expect anyone to dare declaring.

The first no Christian religion to spread happens in 1816AD with Confucianismin Pi-Ramesses as I have open border with Khan and he starts sending missionaries.

In 1822AD I discover that I have no Aluminium… and all AI are far away from getting theirs.

Well I can live without for now as I am researching towards all the modern luxuary, (Eiffel Tower + Rock& Roll started in 1802AD) plus refrigeration (learned in 1806AD) as happiness and health are difficult to manage.

Isa gives some distraction

In 1826AD, Isa declares (as well as on Qin and Capac) and lands some pathetic troops next to Elephantine (because I had only 1 ironclad and sunk only the frigate during the first turn) which is within reach of the tanks that where built and stocked in Pi-Ramesses.

After investigation, I set a goal for this war instead of having a phony war: Zaragoza and the Aluminium.

The logistics are not too easy, 1 transport with marines and cityraider infantries (ex sword) is set asap, another one 2 turn later and all extra troops are set to cross China to meet the transport at the end of the peninsula for sea crossing. 2 destroyers are set to soften the defence (and battleship will arrived latter as well).

In 1836AD China captures (in fact razes) the city in Spain north of Zaragoza and I had to speed every thing fearing to lose the race there.

Zaragoza is rushed-captured easily in 1838AD, hoping Spanish troops are busy further north, but the situation turns desesperate the following turn as a big stack of cavalry appeared.

For some unknown reason, Isa refused an easy kill (destroyed only a marine, and injuring another) and retreat.

With reinforcement coming and Isa not talking, I decide to push further and capture Santander south (1848AD) and Jaen (1860AD) north both on the coast. Isa still not talking and war-weariness becomes a nightmare (apparently capturing city is not the solution to reduce WW as I discovered).

Another push to Salamanca inside (also to free some square from culture, but did not work as I should have gone for Cordoba, but heavily defended with 80% defence) do the trick and Isa accept peace in 1864AD giving all her money as well.

Ending

After war, revolt to Universale Suffrage to be able to cash rush (especially culture in Spain), but was probably a bad idea (less research).

In 1880AD both Qin & Roosevelt get their Apollo.

Being tired to wait for Aluminium to come inside my borders, I trade with Khan for some (giving 4 ressources).

Good thinks as even at the end of the game (next pic) I won’t be able to get my own.

In 1888AD, Thebes finishes the Space Elevartor while Memphis gets Apollo.

In 1890AD Bantu gets UN (nothing else to do anyway), win the election against Qin 1894AD (elected with Khan, Roosevelt and Asoka voices).

Khan gets Apollo as well.

1904 Pass emancipation for all...

1912 Pass Universal Suffrage against khan and Isa (and force Capac and Qin to adopt it)

Got a Def Pact with the 3 Christians (Roosevelt, Qin and Capac).

1916 First to Fusion, get an Engineer, and just need Ecology now. The GE can help with Eco, but 1686 won't even reduce it by 1t...

1920 Pass single currency unanimous.

1921 Isa asks for communism, since it is late I accept

Get Ecology, last 2 parts will be finished in 3t in Thebes and Pi-Ramesses

1924 Finish the space ship, as a humorous kick, Qin is elected Secretary the same turn. And I finish researching biology, so you can see the possible next research including Alphabet on top of the screen.

Conclusion

Not very early, probably because of a few mistakes

Far too much production in strong cities (Pi-Ramesses, Memphis and Heliopolis) with lots of mines and workshop, good for building troops and Wonders, but the world was too peaceful (I even disbanded must obsolete units while Pi was getting a machine gun/tank/marine each turn).

Not enough cottage probably except around Thebes (same as previous).

Probably wrong civics (sometimes): Mercantilism all the time (should have tried Free Market), and Universal Suffrage instead of staying in representation (I didn’t even consider State Property as I had enough food and was running 100% research most of the time – having incomes from all the continent religion helped, as well as great merchant to America for 2500g twice).

AI quite slow in research, maybe because they where following my tracks quite often.

Long useless war resulting in several angry citizens in the best cities for a while…
