PART 3: from 1502AD to the End

Race to UN

With, according to the previous F9 demographics, already 40% of the world population and a good friend I decided that the easiest way to win should be UN, so I try to get there fast, with a few detours to help Arequipa building population.

Whenever the research rate was high enough, the cities spreading continue (until there was no room to expand). Buying World Map and exploring give me the possibility to get first to 2 of the islands in the western Ocean. Hatshe was first to circumnavigate (1601AD), but only because I didn’t realise that it was still not done at that time.

Despite being with negative relation, even Hatshe accepted some tech trades

Wonders wise, Hatshe managed to build Taj Mahal (1589AD), but after that I managed to get all the ones I wanted with Huamanga being the most productive city: Versailles (1637AD) for cultural superiority), Statue of Liberty (1766AD in Huamanga), Ironworks (1812AD) and more to come…

In 1790AD, for the 1st time in all my CivIV game, I revolted to Environnementalism, mainly to give a good health buffer for Arequipa, but with the nice side effect of being able to build Coal Plant everywhere without having any unhealthy city.

Modern Era is reached in 1821AD and UN is built in a record time in 1835AD in Huamanga (with factory, coal plant and Ironworks).

According to F9, I have now a population of 69M, while my opponents have an average of 12M, so it should be an easy backdoor domination victory…except :

I am indeed elected Secretary, but even with Louis votes, I will be a few votes short for the Victory.

As a matter of fact, I try the UN victory next, in 1839, and Louis even abstains (even if it would not have been enough).

Clearly, I was too confident in F9 population to be a good indicator of UN votes.

And now what is Plan B?

The only “good” thing about this miscalculated election is that Arequipa was at size 36 and could grow more, especially since I would have some Great Merchants (4 in total) to help.

To win peacefully (and military is not a serious option now as US and Egypt have Defensive Pact and serious modern armies), I have now to:

  • Grow both mine and Louis’ population to get more than 60% of the votes.
  • Get Louis to vote for me.

To reach both these goals, I trade the absolute minimum with US & Egypt (I need their health bonus), and give everything that could help to Louis (health and happiness bonus, not military technologies…).

In 1842, I presented and passed the non nuclear proliferation (as I don’t vote to deal with that and my only uranium is farmed in Arequipa), followed by Open Market in 1847 (not enough vote to try another Victory).

I have much better relation with US (thanks to +6 for civics) than with Egypt, and from US point, I am not far from being an even better friends than Egypt. The relations with France are not going to improve, with my border cities winning more and more the cultural fights, and despite trading and refusing to stop trading with worst enemy, I am more popular with Roosevelt (+15/-7) than with Louis (+16/-9).

I decide that I will give Louis a last chance to vote for me, but I am now building a serious army (tanks mainly) to capture all his cities if needed.

I also have to make sure that Egypt will still be my opponent and not US.

The next Secretary Election are held in 1851, against Egypt again, and are won with Louis votes for a total of 537/897, i.e. 59.9% which will not be enough again and is not showing a big improvement over the previous vote (59.7%).

In the 1855 Victory election, versus Egypt, Louis signed his own death sentence by abstaining again

Campaign against France

Instead of declaring straight, I manage to convince US to start the war, which will nicely breaks all his Defensive Pacts (with Egypt and Me), and hopefully Roosevelt will ask for help and I will get some nicer relation bonus.

Next year, I cancel all trade with Louis at Roosevelt request, but I am to declare on my own in 1859AD as I am tired of waiting.

The tanks, helped with a few battleships and bombers support, stormed the border cities, on the north coast, capturing Besancon and Chartres the first year, and Avignon the next one (with a chariot as no tanks could reach to finish a very injured infantry…

A small group is sent to capture the French cities in the North-West peninsula, capturing Grenoble and Dijon in 1865.

During that time, the main group is progressing inside France main Peninsula with the capture of Lyon (1862), Marseille (1864) and Orleans (1865), before regrouping before Paris.

In 1868Ad, it is Secretary Election time again against Egypt and I happily get this results: Roosevelt voting for me instead of Hatshe.

The military campaign continues, a small detour on the eastern island, Rouen and Amiens (to prevent Roosevelt from any gain), is completed in 1869.

On the mainland, Paris with a lot of troops resists, but with air superiority (monopoly is more accurate in this case) it is only a short delay before capture (1872) and the rest of mainland France follow soon enough with Rheims (1874) and Tours (1875).

France is then reduced to a small island next to US shores, which will be capture in 1881, note that I manage to have a 0t revolution to Free Religion thanks to a forced “Free Religion” vote on the UN (didn’t want to try my luck at general election as Arequipa will be growing very soon).

Is it over now?

In 1879, despite Arequipa growing to size 40 in 3t, I had enough and decide to get the Victory Election. Unfortunately, the opponent this time is Roosevelt as he managed to overtake Hatshe, not that he managed to even capture a single French city… And of course Hatshe votes for him, so another inconclusive election.

So I stop all the non vital trade to Roosevelt, give anything (health and happiness) I can to Hatshe.

On the other hand, I start colonising anything I can and get ready to remove all Egyptian cities on the continent as I am now not that far away from winning it all on my own votes if necessary.

Finally in 1891, I am facing Hatshe in the vote.

And Roosevelt is nice enough to give me the victory, note that he has exactly the same number of votes as Hatshe.

Quick comment on the F9 at the end of the game, showing my 121M population versus 29M and 17M for (probably) US and Egypt, while the votes are 591 vs 212 and 212.
