Cultural Trends
vol. 15 (2/3), 2006 - issue 58/59

This double number reports on the findings of a large-scale research inquiry on cultural capital and social exclusion in contemporary Britain, carried out between 2003 and 2006. The research considered cultural tastes, cultural knowledge and cultural participation in relation to social divisions and differences.

The nine papers published in this special issue mainly focus on the analysis of the survey material, showing the interconnections between cultural, social and economic inequalities in the sectors of sport, literature, visual arts, music, leisure time activities and broadcasting. The research suggests that cultural and economic capital, expressed in level of education and occupational class, operate also within the mainstream society, beyond the socially excluded.

In the final contribution, Bennett outlines how the findings could lead to a different policy for addressing cultural disengagement.
