International Journal of Heritage Studies
vol. 13 (4-5), July-September 2007

This number is a special issue on nature as heritage, focusing in particular on the relations between culture and nature. The various papers approach this relationship from different angles, but all stress, more or less, the need to integrate the approach to cultural and natural heritage.

The first four articles refer to specific geographical areas, in the Mediterranean Basin and in the UK, and at case studies of specific sites.

Other articles deal with the experience of the World Wide Fund in the conservation of natural heritage (p.365-379); the need of common ethical foundations and interdisciplinary efforts in integrating natural and cultural heritage (p.380-392); the role of environmental education in effective environmental protection (p.393-404).

Of special interest is the article on the international texts of various UN bodies to protect biodiversity and cultural diversity and the effects these have on the mutual interplay between nature and culture (p.405-419).

Also the last article merits attention, presenting spiritual considerations in the protection of human heritage, written from a religious view (p.420-424).
