Iris - Legal Observations of the
European Audiovisual Observatory
no. 8, 2007

This magazine provides news on legal developments in Europe in the fields of broadcasting, cinema and new media.

Of special interest in this number is the presentation of the Resolution on the Social Status of Artists, adopted by the European Parliament in June 2007; the Resolution proposes measures to improve the situation of artists in Europe regarding contracts, social security, sickness insurance, taxation and so on. It also considers mobility and employment of third-country nationals, lifelong training and retraining for artists, amateur artists and arts education from the earliest possible age (p.4-5).

Also worth attention among the international news: the European Commission approved two new film support measures of the Netherlands (p.3-4).

Of interest among the national news: an analysis of the Croatian Act on Audiovisual Works which came into effect on 1 August 2007, establishing a new Croatian Audiovisual Centre which will take over all business connected to Croatian film, including the Croatian film archives, as from 1 January 2008 (p.12-13).

The supplement to this issue, Iris plus, gives an overview of the different legal frameworks for licensing broadcasting in countries of the former Soviet Union. It is available for download in PDF from the Observatory's website at this external link.
