Iris - Legal Observations of the
European Audiovisual Observatory
no. 3, 2006

As usual, this journal provides news on legal developments in Europe in the fields of broadcasting and new media.

Of particular interest is the opening article which summaries the reactions of a variety of intergovernmental organisations, including the Council of Europe, to the upheaval following the publication of the controversial Mohammed cartoons; the statements recognised the offence caused to the religious sensibilities of Muslims, as well as the right to freedom of expression. An additional article is dedicated to the European Parliament Resolution on the Right to freedom of expression and respect for religious beliefs, adopted in the wake of this cartoon controversy.

This number also includes a presentation of the Joint Declaration 2005 on freedom of expression, adopted by the UN, OSCE and OAS which focused on two issues: Internet and anti-terrorism measures.
