Iris - Legal Observations of the
European Audiovisual Observatory
no. 8, 2006

As usual, this journal provides news on legal developments in Europe in the fields of broadcasting, cinema and new media.

Of special interest in this issue is the presentation of the Resolution 1510 adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in June 2006 on Freedom of Expression and Respect for Religious Beliefs; the resolution tries to find a balance between both: "Attacks on individuals on grounds of their religion or race cannot be permitted but blasphemy laws should not be used to curtail freedom of expression and thought".

Also to look out for: the articles presenting the recent European Commission Recommendation on the Digitisation and Online Accessibility of Cultural Material and Digital Preservation, and the European Parliament Resolution on Freedom of Expression on the Internet, adopted in July 2006.

The supplement to this issue, Iris plus, deals with cultural and regional programming obligations in European broadcasting, covering both public service and commercial broadcasters. Under the title Cultural and regional remits in broadcasting, the supplement is available for download in PDF in English, French and German from the Observatory's website at this external link.
