Iris - Legal Observations of the
European Audiovisual Observatory
no. 10, 2006

As usual, this magazine provides news on legal developments in Europe in the fields of broadcasting, cinema and new media.

Of special interest in this number is the presentation of Recommendation Rec(2006)12, recently adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, that encourages the Member States to increase children's Internet and media literacy, aiming in particular at their critical use of media and their protection against harmful content.

Also to look out for: the article presenting the Parliamentary Assembly Recommendation 1768, adopted in October 2006 to encourage a less stereotyped presentation of asylum seekers, migrants and refugees in the media, and to avoid any racist and discriminatory contents.

The supplement to this issue, Iris plus, presents the new jurisdictional regulation package (Rome II), proposed by the EU to settle international disputes of a private nature -e.g. on defamation and personality rights- looking at its impact on the audiovisual sector. It is available for download in PDF in English, French and German from the Observatory's website at this external link.
