The Declaration on the Importance and Value of Universal Museums was signed by the directors of leading museums of Europe and North America in 2002 and addresses the vital role of museums in cultivating and preserving works which are part of the cultural heritage of mankind. The Declaration is reproduced in the "Focus" section of this issue, together with various responses to it.
