Theory, Culture, Society
vol. 24 (4), July 2007

This number is a special issue on transnational public spheres. At its core is an ambitious and provocative article by Fraser on the extension of the public sphere concept to the global level. She critically assesses the public sphere theory in light of the current post-national constellation and sets out to re-politicise the public space,  based on democratic theory and with special emphasis on legitimacy and political efficacy (p.7-30).

This essay is followed by a range of comments that respond to Fraser's article. Among these, the paper by Salvatore on Islamic public sphere is worth attention (p.45-52).
