Tourism
vol. 54 (2) 2006

This special issue is devoted to spiritual and personally meaningful dimensions of tourism, examining tourism that is motivated by religious, spiritual and purposeful experiences or needs. Travel experiences can be intensely personal in nature and result in travellers discovering their own spirituality through introspection, even when it is not expected or purposefully sought. The articles show that spiritual and personally meaningful tourism extends far beyond the limits of classical pilgrimage.

Of special interest is Stone's paper establishing a conceptual framework of "dark tourism" which includes visits to cemeteries, dungeons, conflict sites and concentration camps.
