UNESCO heute
1, 2007

This issue of the magazine of the German UNESCO Commission is dedicated to the topic of intangible cultural heritage. In the centre of interest is the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage which entered into force in April 2006 and which has been ratified so far by 77 states.

A memorandum comprises the results of consultations during 2005 and 2006 with experts from the civil society, looking at challenges and making proposals for dealing with this type of heritage in Germany. The issue also includes the text of the Convention in German translation, and a list of the ninety Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, a  category set-up by UNESCO.

Throughout the journal, colour photographs illustrate the texts, as do the inserted case studies and examples - on the culture of the Sorbian minority in Germany,  the project of the European Music Council on the dialogue of music cultures, etc. One of the examples of intangible heritage is the Council of Europe publication Culinary Cultures of Europe --  identity, diversity and dialogue.

The magazine is available in PDF on the website of the German UNESCO Commission at this external link.
