A definition of voluntary work has been provided in a pamphlet published by the Ministry of Social Affairs in 2001, as voluntary or non-obligatory, undertaken freely without physical force, legal coercion ,or financial pressure, and no threats of financial or social sanctions (for instance being cut off from social security benefits or a social network if the volunteer no longer wishes to continue the work). Center for Frivilligt Socialt Arbejde

The Volunteer Centre in Denmark was established in 1992 on a national basis to promote and support the development of voluntary social work in Denmark. The Volunteer Centre is an independent institution under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Affairs.

The Centre has 13 employees who work with consultation, training and education, development of organizations and networks, models on how to create co-operation between organizations and public authorities, analysis, projects, information and communication.

Our services are designed to support volunteer managers and organisations that involve volunteers. Secondly, our service is offered to the public authorities and others who co-operate with volunteer organizations, and we provide the public and the press with information on voluntary social work.
The Centre is a member of CEV (European Volunteer Centre), IAVE (International Association for Volunteer Effort).
