EPILOGUE - CONCLUSION

1945, THE RETURN

In May 1945, the surviving deportees returned to France. The Strasbourg French University then recorded 139 deads, teachers, administrative clerks and students.

Jean-Paul Cauchi, the founder and chief of Combat Etudiant,  arrested on April 4, 1944 in Paris, then sent in deportation to Buchenwald on August 2, 1944, had been killed by the Germans on April 18, 1945 when the the American troops approached the camp of Buchenwald. He was posthumously made a Captain and granted the Military Cross with palms and the Legion d'honneur.

The Alsace-Lorraine Teachers regained Strasbourg, but the Faculties in Clermont-Ferrand did not close doors.

This is how Clermont-Ferrand became a University town.
